Openings

We are looking for highly motivated and creative individuals to join the CZ Lab. If you are excited about molecular bioelectronics, soft materials, or building devices that interface with living systems, we would love to hear from you.

Postdoctoral Fellows

We are actively recruiting postdoctoral fellows with a PhD in biomedical engineering, materials science, chemistry, electrical engineering, or a related discipline. Strong candidates will have experience in one or more of the following areas: electrochemical sensing, organic electronics, polymer synthesis and characterization, microfabrication, or in vivo bioelectronics. We particularly welcome applicants interested in pursuing independent fellowships.

Graduate Students (MASc and PhD)

We are recruiting PhD and MASc students for Fall 2027 admission through the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. Applicants with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in biomedical engineering, materials science, chemistry, electrical engineering, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Please contact Dr. Zhao before submitting a formal application.

MEng and Undergraduate Researchers

We welcome MEng and undergraduate students interested in gaining hands-on research experience or capstone projects in molecular bioelectronics and soft materials. Summer research positions are available for students within and outside UofT.

How to Apply

Please submit your CV, a cover letter detailing your research experience and publications, and how they align with our group's vision, and the contact information for at least two academic references (for postdoctoral applications) to Dr. Zhao at czzhao@stanford.edu.

Please title your email [Position] Application: Name (School). For example, PhD Application: Jane Smith (UofT) or Postdoc Application: John Lee (McGill).”

UofT BME Recruiting Events

The Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto holds two recruiting events each year for prospective graduate students:

Lab Matchmaking (end of January): Rapid virtual meetings to meet with BME faculty, learn about their research, and share your interests for graduate school.

Graduate Research Day (February): Top prospective students are invited to campus for meetings with faculty and current students, as well as lab tours.

To be considered for BME recruiting events, you must submit your application to the Institute of Biomedical Engineering no later than early January.

Please visit the BME website for deadlines and further information.
